According to Psychology Today and other sources, managing your depression requires that you take some sort of action. But this is the Catch-22 of depression management and recovery!
When you’re depressed, taking action – ANY action – can feel overwhelming. Just thinking about the things that might help you feel better can seem exhausting .
The reality of trying to manage depression is that doing the things that might help you feel better can seem like they are hard to do.
However, there is a big difference between something that’s difficult and something that’s impossible. You may not have much energy, but by drawing on all your strengths, you can usually do SOMETHING. I suggest you walk around your block (just once is a great start!) or call someone you care about just to say “Hi!”.
Even the simplest steps can increase your mood and energy long enough to put a second step into action. By taking small positive steps each day, you might feel the crushing burden of depression lighten and the lightened load can help you feel happier and more hopeful!
